Description:

Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, Chavin culture, Casa Grande region, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A fascinating blackware stirrup vessel - a type of canteen that could be tied to the waist for travel over distances or into the fields - whose thick handle and spout are smooth above globular body whose surface has been scored and sculpted to resemble the rough exterior of a cactus. The vessel rests on a flat base. This iconography may represent the hallucinogenic drugs made from the San Pedro cactus, a major part of Chavin religious ritual.
