Description:

Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, ca. 1100 to 600 BCE. Very fine stone mortar from one of the earliest and most artistically advanced cultures of South America. Gray volcanic stone carved with short lip, incised with decoration of an abstract avian, large eye and feathered tail showing distinctly. Birds were treasured by the ancients of the Americas for their brilliant plumage, and ability to fly as sky animals who communed with the deities. Added red pigment accentuates an already wonderful piece! Size: 4" (10.2 cm) H x 6" (15.3 cm) in diameter.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950-1960s
