Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin culture, ca. 1200 to 500 BCE. A hand-built and highly burnished brownware pottery bottle with a round but stable base, a bell-shaped body with a rounded shoulder, a cylindrical neck, and a flared lip. The body is delicately incised with repeating curvilinear bars bearing a pair of semicircular protrusions on either side of a crescent-shaped, beak-like protrusion. The areas between the curvilinear columns exhibit hundreds of incised zigzagging stripes that create a feathery presentation. The abstract avian creatures are perhaps representative of eagles as they were thought to represent solar movements and act as intermediaries between humans and the gods. Size: 5.4" W x 8.9" H (13.7 cm x 22.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from the 1950s to the 1960s
