Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Chavin, ca. 900 to 200 BCE. A beautiful example of a flute made from a human arm bone with a semicircular end notch, and equal distances between its four finger holes. Researchers note that this style of flute demonstrates a very early knowledge of pitched instruments, and similar ones have been played by Quechua experts at the Peruvian National Museum. This example is beautifully preserved, with a rich, warm patina. Size: 1.1" W x 8.95" H (2.8 cm x 22.7 cm); 10.4" H (26.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Fred Leighton & Alexander Alcevedo collection, New York, New York, USA

  • Condition: Rich, warm-colored patina on bone surface. Light surface wear including some of the outer surface being worn away/pitted, mainly on the back side of the flute. There may be a repair at the center, or possibly just a surface hairline crack - if it is repaired, it is incredibly well done.
