Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Chavin culture, ca. 900 to 200 BCE. A delightful carved camelid bone in the form of a seated duck with a duckling perched atop one wing. The broad, flat beak of the adult is a particularly nice touch by the artisan. Each duck has two turquoise beads for eyes. The Chavin artisan who carved this piece was probably familiar with a type of duck native to the region called the common teal, who lived in the swamps where people found food and reeds for making rafts. Size: 2.1" W x 1.25" H (5.3 cm x 3.2 cm); 2.5" H (6.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950s to 1960s
