Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chavin culture, ca. 1500 to 800 BCE. This is a slightly tapered rectangular slab type mirror handle. It has a low relief carved decoration of joined serpents with fanged mouths; the decoration is highlighted with small quantities of cinnabar. Chavin artwork often depicts serpents -- some researchers believe that snakes and birds were the two most important animals to the ancient Peruvians. This piece was exhibited at the National Museum of Denmark, June 2 through August 14, 1995. Comes with custom stand. Size: 2.15" W x 4" H (5.5 cm x 10.2 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Private Danish Collection from 1970s.
