Description:

Pre-Columbian, Chavin , North Coast Peru, 1200 BCE. Early man at the dawn of civilization created archaic imagery which in German we call Ur- symbol.  In Peru, at the start of civilization, people created centers of worship which mostly were underground.  In such underground temples they put up images that where truly fearsome, like stele of jaguar gods or masks such as this mask showing Ai Apec , the Jaguar God.  If one imagines the dark interior of a underground temple lit only by torches and hearing the chanting of priests preparing a sacrifice one can imagine how this mask must have looked like to a temple visitor.  They must have shook with fear.
