Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. This is an endearing terracotta votive or effigy figure of a standing boar or warthog to offer to a shrine to ensure a successful hunt, or possibly used as a child's toy. The beast stands upright which the legs fused together supporting the rotund body, though there are hints of powerful muscles in the shoulders and haunches. The characteristic large head has a pointed snout, perked ears, and crest along the back. Boar hunting was a masculine pursuit as these animals were notoriously aggressive and dangerous to kill, and represented strength and virility. Indeed, Hercules' fourth labor was to bring back the mythical Erymanthian Boar alive - not an easy task! Size: 6.3" L x 2.5" W x 4.2" H (16 cm x 6.4 cm x 10.7 cm)
