Description:

Pre-Columbian, El Salvador, Maya Culture, Early Classic to Late Classic Period, ca. 300 to 900 CE. An endearing hand-built effigy pottery vessel, the round body takes on the form of a frog, a symbol of fertility. The frog’s limbs are molded in low relief and evenly spaced, the nubbin feet creating a stable base for the vessel to rest on. The face of the frog protrudes from the contours of the vase, complete with bulging round eyes, indented nostrils, and impressed mouth; a small bump signifies the hind, further accentuated by rotating black slashes similar to the rays of the sun. The rest of the surface is slipped in a tan hue with black cross-hatched diamond shapes and stippled dots while the flared neck is painted with a band of glyphs in red. Size: 6" Diameter x 4.75" H (15.2 cm x 12.1 cm)
