Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A charming hand-built pottery depiction of a mother with a child! The mother sits with her legs out before her and her feet sticking out from under her skirt. The child sits on her lap and touches her right arm. The mother is upright, her shoulders are broad, and the body is very flat- a style characteristic of Colima figures. Both figures have applied jewelry, even the child is wearing large earspools. The mother has a necklace, armbands, and earrings. Her visage appears almost trancelike - with applied coffee bean shaped eyes and an angular nose that juts over her petite lips. Upon her elongated head is a knotted cloth headdress. Fertility and motherhood were popular themes in Meso-American cultures, and this is a wonderful example of maternal love! Size: 4" L x 2.25" W x 5.75" H (10.2 cm x 5.7 cm x 14.6 cm)
