Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A tightly woven textile fragment with 32 feline motifs arranged in eight rows of four, each standing upright with raised paws; stylized and delineated in red and white dyed camelid fibers (llama or alpaca) against a natural beige ground. A sweet example ideal for any cat lover, created by the Chancay peoples of Central Andes who were keen observers of the natural world! While the jaguar may be the feline that comes to mind most often when thinking of Pre-Columbian cultures, there are about 8 species of wild cats in Peru that may have inspired this delightful textile! The panel is professionally mounted on a cotton backing over a wood frame and is ready to display! Size (textile): 13" L x 5.25" W (33 cm x 13.3 cm); (canvas frame): 6" L x 1" W x 14" H (15.2 cm x 2.5 cm x 35.6 cm)
