Charles Kinney (American, 1906-1991). "Gron Hog Day" mixed media painting on found cardboard, dated 1980 on verso. Born in northeast Kentucky near Vanceburg, Charles "Charley" Kinney was a self-taught artist as well as a fiddler, magician, and storyteller. Having grown up in a log cabin, Kinney was a farmer who lived off the land until he passed away, and his artwork demonstrates a strong connection with rural Appalachia. Kinney's incredible bond with his native land and its animals is evident in "Gron Hog Day". (Kinney oftentimes included such phonetically spelled words in this paintings.) Size of artwork: 13" L x 22" W (33 cm x 55.9 cm) Size of frame: 19.75" L x 28.875" W (50.2 cm x 73.3 cm)

By the 1970s, Kinney's art was gaining quite a following. Today his works have been collected by the Kentucky Folk Art Center, the Owensboro Museum of Art in Owensboro, Kentucky, the Huntington Museum of Art in West Virginia, and the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama. In addition, his work has been exhibited at the New Orleans Museum of Art and Morehead State University.

  • Condition: Artwork has not been examined outside the frame. Peripheries have some nicks that were likely there to begin with, since Kinney painted on a found piece of cardboard. The piece is dated to 1980 (handwritten "year 1980") on the verso. The frame is in very good condition and is wired for suspension.
