Description:

Pre-Columbian, Chancay, modern day Peru, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. This is a striking twin lobed jar, painted all over in a creamy white slip, with one side of the drum-like lobes a narrow, cylindrical spout, and the other a standing figure with hands on (I think his) hips. These two sides are joined by a flat strap handle. The figure has enormous earrings, a necklace, and a distinctive pointed headdress. Chancay ceramics have been found mainly in the cemeteries of the Ancon and Chancay valleys; this pottery seems to have been produced on a large scale using molds. Their pottery would start with a rough matte surface that would be slipped later, with a creamy color like this being one of their diagnostic colors. Size: 2" L x 6.7" W x 9.3" H (5.1 cm x 17 cm x 23.6 cm)
