Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A nicely-preserved weaver's basket comprised of tightly-woven reeds and filled with original sewing/weaving implements. The weaving tools include a fragmentary reed pan flute consisting of 8 hollow reeds; 4 wooden needles; 3 wooden needles with tufts of thread; 2 wooden needles with attached pottery spindle whorls; a loose spool of thread; a woven textile sling (known as a "honda"); and 12 loose pottery spindle whorls, some with applied decorative pigment. Size (basket): 3" L x 8.5" W x 2.125" H (7.6 cm x 21.6 cm x 5.4 cm).

  • Condition: Basket has some fraying and small areas of loss as well as slight bending to lid and overall form. Small losses to some wooden needles, light chips and fading to pigmentation of pottery spindle whorls, and loss to thread bindings of pan flute pipes. Light earthen deposits throughout.
