Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A pottery female figure known as a cuchimilco, or "star-gazer," depicted standing atop straight legs with thick arms raised and spread outward. The characteristically broad head is pierced for attaching additional ornamentation such as woven cords or metal danglers. These cuchimilco style figures are usually female and their full symbolism and purpose is unknown; however, as they have been frequently discovered in Chancay graves, some scholars argue that they may have represented a symbolic female companion to accompany the deceased into the afterworld. - Condition: Bubbling and rippled texture to the legs, perhaps from a firing imperfection. Chips and abrasions to the nose and chin. Stable pressure fissures along the sides. Fading and losses to pigment.
