Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1300 CE. A nicely preserved sewing basket of woven reeds with an assortment of original textile weaving tools as well as a child's tan-and-white tunic composed of tightly-woven natural cotton fibers. Among the tools are a spool of white cotton thread with a pottery spindle whorl; an X-shaped polychrome spool; a double-sided straightening comb; two small sticks; a redware pottery spindle whorl; and a pair of dark-hued pottery spindle whorls. Size (box): 3" L x 6.75" W x 3.25" H (7.6 cm x 17.1 cm x 8.3 cm); size of largest item (tunic): 11" W x 7" H (27.9 cm x 17.8 cm).

  • Condition: Some wooden sticks are fragmentary, and spool with white thread is broken at midpoint. Minor nicks and bending to basket. Light fraying and staining to child's tunic. Minor fading to coloration of dyed thread. Light earthen deposits throughout.
