Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. A colorful loosely woven gauze or lace like textile panel made from cotton and camelid wool (alpaca or llama) with a repeated San Pedro cactus cross section motif. The San Pedro cactus contains mescaline a hallucinogenic chemical that was used for traditional medicine and rituals. Representations of the San Pedro cactus carved in stone, textiles, and ceramics have been found in many Andean cultures, but the use of the cactus was largely suppressed by the Spanish colonizers and Catholic Church. This textile is mounted to a black cotton fabric that is stretched over a frame and is ready to display! Size of textile: 21" L x 21" W (53.3 cm x 53.3 cm); backing: 23" L x 23" W (58.4 cm x 58.4 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, 1995 to 2010; ex-Gary Drimmer collection, Chicago, Illinois, USA, 1950 to 1960
