Description:

Pre-Columbian, central coastal Peru, ca. 1000 CE. Some of the rarest pieces of ancient art to come from Peru are pyro-engraved gourds. Created by taking a hollow gourd and using a hot tool to engrave decorations on the side, these only survive due to the extreme dryness found along the Peruvian coast. This very fine example features 4 adorable couples holding hands and possibly dancing. Intertwined among the figures are a series of elaborate geometric patterns. These little enigmatic figures are often found on Chancay textiles, but this is the first example we have ever seen on one of these pyro-engraved gourds. Nice! Size: 5.75" W x 3.25" H (14.6 cm x 8.3 cm)

Provenance: ex Stein collection, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, acquired from Haig's of Rochester prior to 2010
