Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay, ca. 1200 to 1470 CE. A bi-chrome pottery vessel of rounded form used for storing and transporting chicha de jora, fermented corn beer. An egg-shaped body with a small neck, flanking strap handles, and a slightly flared rim that is embellished by painted geometric black patterns and horizontal lines. Emerging from one side is a man delineated in low to high relief. His limbs appear as slender ridges spread-eagle away from the rectangular body. The bearded head wears a pointed cap that juts off the vessel's body. This is a fabulous piece of pottery that is a masterful example of Chancay style! Lucite in photo not included. Size: 5.5" W x 7.5" H (14 cm x 19 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Frankfurt, Germany collection, pre-1970s
