Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A mold-formed pottery vessel of an intriguing form depicting a bulbous squash gourd with a spherical, black-hued body, a tapered, curved neck, and a pyramidal, cream-hued stem on top. The gourd body is lined with dozens of protruding ovoid nodules that are perhaps representative of the gourd's naturally textured surfaces. Above the body is a wide, conical spout with a thick rim and an exterior register of abstract eyes or avian heads that are segregated within diagonal bars in hues of black and beige. A fascinating phytomorphic artifact from the ancient Chavin! Size: 4.9" W x 8.3" H (12.4 cm x 21.1 cm)
