Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 900 to 1250 CE. A wonderful pottery vessel in the form of a stylized figure seated with legs propped up and holding a kero with both hands. Surmounted by a sizable, flared headdress that doubles as the vessel's spout, the figure displays wide-open eyes - suggestive of psychedelic intoxication - as well as a pointed nose, a closed mouth, and a jutting chin, all flanked by a pair of annular earspools. Four spiked lugs protrude from the sides of the headdress allowing for suspension. All is enveloped in creamy beige-hued slip with applied black pigment serving as face paint, decorating the earspools and headdress, and delineating the limbs from the body. Size: 6.5" Diameter x 12.2" H (16.5 cm x 31 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010
