Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A playful pottery jar showcasing a figure resembling a cross between a human and turtle with a swollen, shell-like body and a petite tail, as well as an anthropomorphic head and arms. Wearing a conical headdress, the curious creature lies atop the egg-shaped body of the vessel as a sizeable, flared spout rises from his back. The bulbous vessel is flanked by a pair of vertical handles and sits upon a rounded base as intricate black and white geometric motifs adorn its exterior. Size: 6.5" Diameter x 9.3" H (16.5 cm x 23.6 cm)
