Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-built pottery jar of tall, ovoid form exhibiting a broad figure holding a petite olla with both hands. The figure has a bird painted on one shoulder and a triangular applique on the other shoulder, perhaps once part of a larger zoomorph. A canteen and a bundle of sticks on the verso is held aloft via the patterned tumpline that would have wrapped around the figure's forehead at one time.
