Pre-Columbian, Peru, Central Coast, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1300 CE. A matching pair of bichrome egg-shaped figures, unusual not only because they are completely closed forms rather than open vessels, but also because they represent intriguing horned creatures with both humanoid and zoomorphic features. Tiny breasts and feet protrude. Both hold their hands upward in an orant gesture; both present boldly painted facial details embellished with tattoo like designs, and both wear a fancy tunic adorned with an "X" pattern on both the front and back, with each quadrant adorned with a schematic feather-like motif, all painted in rich chocolate brown on white ground. Size: each measures ~ 7.375" W x 14" H (18.7 cm x 35.6 cm)
