Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. A polychrome terracotta depiction of a member of the elite strapped (note the horizontal striations over his body) to his elaborate deathbed litter, adorned with rows of concentric circles, perhaps representing seeds or eggs signifying the circle of life. He wears a horned headdress or coiffure, and presents a wide-eyed expression as he is about to be lowered to his eternal resting place. Custom stand. Size: 4.5" W x 6.25" H (11.4 cm x 15.9 cm); 6.75" H (17.1 cm) on stand.
