Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay or Chimu culture, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. This fantastical cotton tight tabby / plain weaving textile features motifs that were not woven but painted on to the fiber surface in alternating brown and beige hues. The figures were probably intended to represent fierce supernatural beings, but they are much more reminiscent of cute puppet monsters - the stylized squat bodies are endearing, despite their teeth and claws. The being on the dark ground has snakes or fish protruding from his head like antennae and the other has sinuous bird like and fish beings surrounding. While the iconography of this textile remains unclear, some scholars have advanced the theory that figures shown face on (like the ones on this textile) are deities.
