Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-built and hollow-formed pottery vessel depicting a standing camelid (alpaca or llama) creature with transverse stripes and stippling decorating its back. The brown-hued pigment stands out atop the cream-hued body while a perky tail protrudes from the verso and a stylized head dips down in the front, perhaps to show the creature grazing. Size: 11" L x 5.8" W x 6.8" H (27.9 cm x 14.7 cm x 17.3 cm)
