Pre-Columbian, Peru, Central Coast, Chancay culture, ca. 1000-1470 CE. The Chancay culture is known for their unique animated figures. This standing female with stubby upraised arms is slip painted in white with details in dark brown as is characteristic of the Chancay style. Her eyes are oval with long oblique extensions from the corners to the temples. She is further adorned with a brown headband and eye-shaped ornaments paint on her cheeks. Paired with this figure is an attractive globular pedestal vessel ornamented with geometric designs painted in chocolate brown on white ground. A tiny frog perches on the shoulder of the piece.
