Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 CE. A very colorful terracotta standing Cuchimilco or stargazer holding her arms in an upraised position of prayer and adoration. Perforations in ears and nostrils for attaching ornaments. Lateral firing holes through sides. Such hollow-body figures are more often painted in dark brown-black on white; however, this standing female displays a more unusual polychrome finish, low fired in hues of red, black, and white slip to decorate her magnificent headdress, highlight her facial features, indicate ornaments such as a necklace, tattoos or ornamental bands on her limbs, and outline the locus of her womb. Size: 13-3/4"H (34.9 cm). **Back at auction due to non-paying bidder** Provenance: Ex-private San Diego, CA collection; ex-private Boston, MA collection; ex-Arte Primitivo; ex-private Danish collection, acquired in the 1970s. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #101765

  • Condition: Intact. What appear to be pressure cracks are not actually cracks but rather simply the resulting rough finish of a somewhat crude process. Surface wear and paint loss.
