Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 CE. A beautiful, lace-like woven textile comprised of cotton threads of ruby red and creamy white hues - woven and knotted (somewhat akin to tatting) with a repeated San Pedro cactus cross section motifs. The branches of the San Pedro cactus contain a hallucinogenic substance that was used for traditional medicine and rituals.Ancient Peruvian textiles demonstrate immense artistic and technical developments achieved by the Andean civilizations. This elegant example is stitched to a black cotton fabric that is stretched over a board for display. Size: 20" W x 20.75" H (50.8 cm x 52.7 cm); 21.5" W x 22.8755" H (54.6 cm x 58.1 cm) including fabric mount.
