Description:

Pre-Columbian, central coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel shaped like a seated hunchbacked figure who is perhaps also a dwarf, adorned with black pigment atop a cream ground. The intricate figure rests with crossed legs on a flat base, holds both slender arms to his knees, and leans dramatically forward. The front of his broad collar is adorned with dense stippling that creates an appearance of royalty of being held in high societal esteem. His wide face bears bulging ovoid eyes with curling lower lashes, a slender nose, pouty lips decorated with a vertical black stripe, cupped ears, and a black-painted headband, all beneath a wide, tall rim that perhaps doubles as his headdress. Size: 5.25" W x 6.25" H (13.3 cm x 15.9 cm); 6.6" H (16.8 cm) on included custom stand.
