Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1200 CE. Standing bichrome hollow pottery llama, with fat body, open mouth and painted black over buff abstract geometric decoration. The Chancay peoples appreciated llamas for their utility as well as their endearingly contrarian personality. The llama was the only domesticated animal of the ancient Americas that also served as a beast of burden. This example is so adorable! Size: 6.5" L x 3.25" H (16.5 cm x 8.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Kalman Collection, Arcadia, CA; Ex-Jules Berman Collection, acquired before 1972.
