Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-built pottery beaker-form cup with a flat base, a flared body with a thin rim, and a pair of abstract zoomorphic handles on either side of the deep basin. The cream-slipped vessel features two black-painted panels with a dense checkerboard motif on one side and zigzagging bands filled with white 'eyes' and lined with petite serrations. The zoomorphic handles present standing with squat legs, lengthy tails, and raised heads with lengthy snouts. A charming example of Chancay artistry! Size: 6.375" W x 4.4" H (16.2 cm x 11.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Dr. E. Lehr collection, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, collected in the 1970s
