Description:

South Asia, Northeastern India / Burma border & Myanmar, Chang Naga people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A fabulous warrior man's helmet woven and plaited into a conical shape from cane fibers and dyed red cane panels. The surface is decorated with 2 large boar tusks and plumes of red-dyed goat's hair form a crest and tassels. These hats were worn by warriors during festivals, complemented by jewelry. Size: 7.5" Diameter x 11" H (19 cm x 27.9 cm); 19" H (48.3 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Active shedding to hairs. Hair tassel on the front is partially torn out from the basketry surface, but still attached. Boar tusks have cracks, and a small piece might need to be stabilized with adhesive but is still attached. Basketry foundation has a few losses to edges of the plaiting, but overall great condition and tightly woven.
