Description:

Central Asia, ca. late 2nd to 1st millennium BCE. A rare example of a cast bronze knife with one edge curved and sharpened, the other slightly wider. One end has a thin, rectangular handle terminating in a ring, cast as a single piece with the blade. The surface of the handle has a low relief repeated triangle motif that looks like steep mountains. The production of bronze weapons in this region - which today encompasses a huge area stretching from the Caspian to Mongolia - began to intensify around 2000 BCE. Although research is still limited from this time and place, knives like this one are found in the graves of warriors alongside axes, arrowheads, and spearpoints. Size: 8.8" W (22.4 cm)
