Description:

Central Asia, 2nd millennium BCE. This is a finely shaped small copper axe head with a narrow socket and a hook on the obverse that could have served a variety of purposes. The mineral-deposit heavy Altai Mountains of Central Asia were an important site of mining for a large geographic region of the ancient world, with probable exportation to China in the east and modern-day Saudi Arabia in the west. The region also had their own industry; archaeologists have found evidence for copper and tin production there in the 3rd and 2nd millennia BCE. This distinctive axe head represents that industry. Size: 4.75" L x 1.8" W (12.1 cm x 4.6 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Estate of John Piscopo. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages.
