Description:

Western and Central Europe, La Tene Culture (sometimes called Celtic), ca. 500 to 1 BCE. This is a long, thin iron socketed spearhead with a still-sharp point and very little rust or corrosion -- it must have been buried in a very dry place! From ca. 275 BCE, the La Tene culture -- Iron Age agriculturalists who produced swirling, delicate metalwork -- clashed continuously with the expanding Roman Republic (and later Empire). This means that they produced many weapons! In fact, the name of the culture comes from La Tene, Switzerland, where in the 1800s, archaeologists found a large cache of weapons in Lake Neuchatel ("La Tene" means "the shallows", which is where the weapons were found). La Tene warfare utilized chariots, ring armor, strong iron swords, and spears like this one. Comes with custom stand. Size: 9.75" L x 1.1" W (24.8 cm x 2.8 cm).

Provenance: Ex B.C. Antiques, Los Angeles gallery, closed in the 1970's; Ex Christie's 1983.
