Description:

Western Asia, Dagestan Region, located on the northwestern shores of the Caspian Sea, ca. 1500 to 500 BCE. A miniature bronze standing idol, featuring two anthropomorphic figures with smooth bodies, long faces featuring large, pointed noses, conical caps, and their outside arms reaching upward in the classic style of bronze figures from the region. They stand atop two quadrupeds, probably lions based on their dramatic manes. This particular style of idol comes from the Caucasus, a little-studied region, with most academic studies done in Russian. These small bronze figures seem to have been part of an incredibly long artistic tradition; they look similar to clay ones created during the Neolithic period. Interestingly, Russian archaeologists have found some examples of these small idols buried with remains of clothing on them - perhaps why their bodies are so undecorated. Size: 1.5" L x 1.95" W x 2.5" H (3.8 cm x 5 cm x 6.4 cm)
