Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua region, Casas Grandes culture, Villa Ahumada type, ca. 1350 to 1450 CE. This remarkable, coil-formed pottery jar features two applied snakes slithering across the shoulder, complemented by red and black painted decoration on a cream-colored ground. The snakes' bodies and heads, raised in relief from the surface, almost form a continuous circle as they seem to chase each other around the pot. The different patterns on the snakes - checkered and striped - might represent two different species: a striped kingsnake and a diamondback rattlesnake. Kingsnakes are nonvenomous but resistant to rattlesnake venom and often prey upon rattlesnakes—a remarkable and bold behavior to witness in nature when rattlesnake bites pose a risk and potential death to nearly all other animals and humans! Size: 8" Diameter x 5.75" H (20.3 cm x 14.6 cm).
