Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua region, Casas Grandes culture, ca. 1100 to 1350 CE. A hand-carved stone mortar of relatively ovoid form with a shallow groove incised around the exterior surface. The deep basin was perhaps able to hold ample amounts of grindable material, from foodstuffs and medicinal ingredients to substances pulverized for colorful pigment.
