Description:

Pre-Columbian, northern Mexico, Casas Grandes culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. This may not look all that important but this is such an incredibly rare and fascinating pair of objects that we can almost guarantee you will never see another. The trading of colorful birds for the usage of their bright feathers was an important part of pre-contact life in Meso-America. Birds like parrots and macaws were bred among the Casas Grandes peoples but also up into the Anasazi in the north and the Aztec to the south. These 2 stones are the entrance and plug "door" to a bird enclosure. A bit primitive by modern standards, but still functioned as designed - to keep the birds safe and free from escaping. Size of enclosure : 15.5" W x 13" H (39.4 cm x 33 cm) Size of plug: 14.5" L x 4.5" W (36.8 cm x 11.4 cm)
