Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua region, Casas Grandes, Ramos Polychrome type, ca. 1150 to 1450 CE. A double headed pottery vessel in the Ramos polychrome style, with a globular body and the animal heads protruding from opposite sides. The surface is slipped in a warm buff hue and painted with black and red motifs. The animals may represent coatimundis or badgers, with striped snouts and petite ears. While decorative and symbolic, the heads could have also functioned as lugs or handles. Size: 8.75" W x 5" H (22.2 cm x 12.7 cm)

Both badgers and coatis (coatimundis) are found in Mexico, and both are depicted in pre-Columbian art. The iconography of these animals can be confusing - the coati has a similar facial structure and black and white markings as badgers, and it does not help that the Spanish word for badger is "tejon," but in Mexico this word is also used to describe the coati. Whether this vessel is a badger or coati, both creatures are native to the region and make for an interesting depiction!
