Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Casas Grandes, Ramos Polychrome type, ca. 1150 to 1450 CE. A gadrooned Ramos polychrome olla jar with traditional geometric patterns in black and orange painted over a matte buff slip. The 4 concave fluted areas are dotted and enclosed in vertical stripes, creating the semblance of a cactus! The Casas Grandes culture relied on the natural resources of their arid environment, including cactus. Cacti served multiple purposes, providing not only a source of food and hydration but also materials for construction and tools - the spines of various cacti were utilized for needles and other implements.
