Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua, Casas Grandes (Paquime), ca. 1130 to 1450 CE. An adorable pottery vessel in the form of a fish featuring a bulbous body with a petite face at one end and a bifurcated tail at the other. Surmounted by a raised rim, the body of the aquatic animal is enveloped in creamy beige-hued slip adorned by red and black painted zigzag patterns reminiscent of pectoral fins. His black-painted visage is comprised of target motif eyes, incised nostrils, and an open mouth. The rim has been pierced with 4 drill holes, allowing the vessel to be suspended. Just imagine the effect once this ancient vessel was hung in one's home - the charming fish must look as though he's swimming through the air with each blow of breeze! Size: 10.8" L x 7.5" W x 5.9" H (27.4 cm x 19 cm x 15 cm)

Provenance: private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000
