Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Chihuahua, Casas Grandes (also known as Paquime), ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A hand-built and beautifully painted human effigy vessel depicting a nude seated man with features delineated in low to high relief, including genitalia between legs bent inward and hands placed on his chest. The head rises up above the front rim of the vessel and has a pinched nose, angular chin, impressed eyes, mouth, and incised curlicue ears. The cheeks are painted in red and black over the cream ground - linear tattoo marks or face paint and the remainder of the body decorated with repeating stepped, triangular, and other geometric and linear patterns. Size: 6.5" Diameter x 8.5" H (16.5 cm x 21.6 cm)
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report is available to the buyer upon request.
Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

- Condition: Repaired and restored. Faint break lines on exterior with infill and overpainting. Surface abrasions and fading to pigments. TL hole on interior lip rim of head and second TL hole on base. Nice preservation to overall form and motifs.
