Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Casas Grandes culture, Madera Black-on-Red type, ca. 1250 to 1450 CE. A hand-built pottery jar of squat form exhibiting a pair of lug handles protruding from the sides that resemble abstract zoomorphic creatures, perhaps frogs or mice. The russet-ground exterior features black-painted linear decorations that include spiraling tendrils, solid triangular blocks, and dozens of petite spots around each creature's head; an additional pair of suspension tubes are situated along the upper rim. Size: 5.6" L x 4.625" W x 4.3" H (14.2 cm x 11.7 cm x 10.9 cm)
