Lot 31
Magna Graecia, Apulia, Southern Italy, Canosa, ca. 3rd century BCE. Exquisite and elaborately decorated oinochoe (wine pouring vessel) with upper register decorated with relief masks of goddesses and Satyrs. The lower register depicts Heracles fighting with two centaurs and the Lernaean hydra. Rare subject matter, rare condition and an overall superb vessel of ancient Greece! Size: 5.3" W x 11.875" H (13.5 cm x 30.2 cm)
Canosa, or Canosion as it was known then, was a major center of the ceramics and pottery trade when it was a Greek polis. It produced truly unique pottery, completely different in decoration style (although not in shape) from earlier and neighboring traditions. The clay is buff, with the decoration applied directly to it without the use of slip. The entire body was covered with white slip, with a second ground of yellow color applied over the background.
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report will accompany the item upon purchase.
