Description:

Europe, England & Canada, Quebec, Colonial Period, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. A pair of silver trade pins from the English Hudson's Bay Company and a French Quebec silversmith. The Hudson's Bay brooch is a swan over a cut out Luckenbooth style heart, the mark "HB" on the tail. The other is a turtle with a cut out fleur-de-lis with the maker mark "P.H" and "QUEBEC" for silversmith Pierre Dit Latour Huguet (1749-1817). Both are in display cases with typed labels. Silver and other metal goods played a significant role in the interactions between European colonists, particularly the British and the French fur traders, and Native American tribes. These brooches were given in exchange for furs or other goods, and the brooches were widely worn by the Iroquois tribes as symbols of wealth and indicated the relationships they had with European traders. Size of heart: 1.6" L x 1.3" W (4.1 cm x 3.3 cm); turtle: 2.5" L x 1.5" W (6.4 cm x 3.8 cm); display cases: 8.25" L x 6.25" W (21 cm x 15.9 cm); silver quality: 87% to 90%; total combined weight: 8.4 grams
