Description:

Ancient Near East, The Levant, Canaan, Canaanite culture, ca. late 2nd millennium BCE. An interesting offering vessel that is hand-built from coarse pottery and covered in pale yellow slip. The broad vessel rests upon a petite circular base, has a thin rim surrounding the deep basin, and features four handles as stylized busts of Ashtoreth (also Astarte, Ishtar), the Canaanite goddess of fertility and war. The busts present characteristically female attributes such as large eyes, full breasts, slender necklines adorned with several impressed 'beaded' necklaces, and diadems with similarly impressed motifs. Size: 6.5" W x 3.4" H (16.5 cm x 8.6 cm)
