Description:

Ancient Near East, the Levant, Canaan, Middle Bronze Age, ca. 1950 to 1539 BCE. A leaded-bronze axe head formed via the lost wax (cire perdue) process, featuring a distinct "duckbill" form. This weapon boasts a curved edge, an openwork socketing shaft, and a pair of large ovoid perforations that enhance aerodynamic efficiency and lend it a zoomorphic appearance, resembling the nostrils on a duck's beak. The robust design, with a thick spine and ribbed center, provided lethal weight and functionality. Such axe heads are associated with Hazor, a key Canaanite city-state described in the Book of Joshua as a site of significant conquest during the Israelites' occupation of the Promised Land. This piece exemplifies the craftsmanship and martial culture of the Middle Bronze Age Levant. Size: 4" L x 2" W (10.2 cm x 5.1 cm); 4.6" H (11.7 cm) on included custom stand.
